More and more attention is paid to the use of ICT and more specifically, social software, for improving the social inclusion of Youth at Risk. The collaborative INCLUSO project (Sept. 2008- Sept. 2010) responded to this concern as it aims to deliver a verifiable proof that ICT, and more precisely, social software tools, can facilitate social inclusion of youth at risk. INCLUSO, after an initial phase of desk research, currently has four pilot projects running in 4 countries. The practical conclusions will be bundled in a Whitebook together with a business and sustainability model for actions implementing ICT in the area of social inclusion.

Challenging Poverty - Creating Hope, breaking the cycle of Poverty and Health Problems

Research has shown clear bidirectional links between mental health and poverty. People experiencing poverty are particularly vulnerable towards developing mental health problems. Conversely people with existing mental health problems are more likely to experience poverty. Uncertainties about the future dominate their daily lives. Mental Health Europe (MHE) will present the results of a survey that was conducted among its members prior to the conference, with a focus on poverty and mental health problems of children and young people, women, older people and migrants.

How can non-prescription medicines best contribute to public health?

Self-care has become an important and recognised part of healthcare. However, the full potential of non-prescription medicines and their contribution to public health have not yet been fully explored.The confernce will discuss how wider access to medicines and, by that, better availability of non-prescription medicines may improve the health situation of European citizens and howthey may contribute positively to public health. Key issues to be addressed will be the most appropriate system for evaluation and authorisation of non-prescription medicines as well as the most effective way of relaying information to the citizens. The conference is organised during the Belgian EU presidency and has been awarded the label ‘Belgian EU Presidency Event’. It is held back-to-back with a meeting of the EU heads of medicines agencies. During the conference there will be numerous exchanges between representatives of the EU medicines agencies and the self-care industry. In addition there will be ample opportunity for informal discussions and networking.

ENG Assessment of EU nutrition policy

At the event various Member States (Belgium, Germany, France, Portugal and Slovenia) will report with evaluations of their nutrition policies. DG Sanco and WHO Europa will also report on the EU Strategy for Europe on nutrition, Overweight and obesity related health issues and the WHO 2nd Action Plan on food and nutrition policies. There will also be assessments of the progress made and of the gaps that exist in various areas. Consideration will also be given to the methodology used in making the assessments.
